Laxman(Salman) is born special. He is feeble-minded. He is lonely as a child. His neighbours and friends in Jagatpur are fond of him but tease him and call him tubelight because he takes time to absorb things. Years later his mother gives birth to Bharat(Sohail). Bharat is younger in years but smarter in the head. He protects Laxman in school and in all life-situations. When their parents die; his father due to alcoholism and his mother due to poverty and sadness, Bharat takes full charge of Laxman. Their other support factor is Banne Chacha(Om Puri) and Maya(Isha Talwar). While Bharat enrols for the Indo-China War in the Kumaon Regiment because that is the need of the hour, Salman is disqualified because of his mental disability. Bharat worries about how he will leave Laxman alone, but Banne Chacha tells him not to worry. He promises to care for Laxman. Everyday Banne Chacha teaches Laxman a few good things. He tells him stories on Gandhi and how he did Satyagraha and won the British over. He asks him to keep his faith. Laxman also meets a magician called Go Go Pasha(Shah Rukh Khan) who tells him that if he has faith in himself, he can literally move mountains. Since Laxman is innocent he believes this. After Bharat goes to war, Laxman frequently runs to the army base to ask about how his brother is faring. He is laughed at and teased by some insensitive soldiers who think he is a joker. Narayan(Mohammed Zeeshan) also bullies poor Laxman because he is feeble-minded. One day Liling(Zhu Zhu) and her son Guo(Matin) come to Jagatpur. Since they are Chinese and since India is at war with China, the locals eye this mother-son with suspicion. There is a lot of hatred building up against them. At this juncture,Liling tells the locals that she and her son are as much Indian as anyone else because her family had migrated to India years ago and so though she is born Chinese, her heart beats for India. Laxman befriends Guo, who he calls Goo. Everyday Laxman prays that the war will be over and his younger brother Bharat will return to him. He prays feverntly and even volunteers to move mountains. And when there is a slight rumbling the poor guy actually believes that he has done it. But it is actually an earthquake that has occured. Finally one day it is announced that a Laxman Rekha(LOC) has been drawn and that the Chinese troops have withdrawn. War has ended. However Bharat it is said has been captured by the Chinese and is probably dead.
After the war Liling's father returns. However one of the locals who is still angry with the Chinese attacks the unsuspecting man. Liling decides to leave this town that is so full of hatred. Laxman however loves Guo and he goes to protect Liling and her family. This is around the time he hears that Bharat has died while trying to escape from the Chinese Army. Though Laxman breaks down and weeps, he finds it hard to believe that his brother has passed away. To his luck, when Liling is leaving town, she hears that Bharat is not DEAD. Some other soldier has passed away and Bharat is actually recuperating in the army hospital. Laxman rushes to his brother. And is happy that he will not be separated from him again.
