Set in 2029,the film begins at a time when mutants are on the verge of extinction, Charles Xavier's (Sir Patrick Stewart) school doesn't exist anymore and he along with Logan (Hugh Jackman) lead an austere life hiding near the Mexican border before getting embroiled in a life and death situation.
After 17 years of playing one of the most popular characters in the X-Men franchise, Hugh Jackman (Wolverine/ Logan) naturally has a lot riding on his hunky shoulders in Logan-the third and last installment in the solo Wolverine series. Don't expect to see the X-Men in all their glory because the characters have aged and been through the fires. Xavier's declining mental and physical health (he's in his 90s now) and Logan's ageing body almost make us feel sorry for the two characters. While Logan earns a living by driving a limousine, getting drunk and getting into fights, Xavier's disintegrating mind compels him to stay sedated in order to keep his colossal psychic powers under control. The film has a lot of gory scenes-there's plenty of bloodshed thanks to Logan's notorious adamantium claws-so be prepared. But what shines through the action are the number of emotional moments between the lead characters, making it the most moving film of the franchise so far. Debutant Laura Kinney/ X-23(Dafne Keen) at 11, will give tough competition to other actresses her age. With skills and claws just like Logan's, the feisty youngster is being hunted down by a group of merciless troublemakers, who're led by Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook). Logan and Xavier unwillingly become a part of the plan to save Laura and the trio embark on a dangerous adventure, which forms the crux of the film. It's interesting to see how the relationship between the three characters plays out and how despite initial resistance from Logan, the trio become an unlikely family. What makes the movie different from other superhero flicks is the way director James Mangold has dealt with the subject-without hesitating to show his ageing superheroes go into battle while they fight their own inner demons. Also, the highlight of the film is Jackman's compelling performance. He knows it is his swan song and he exits with a flourish-an unforgettable end to a remarkable odyssey. You don't have to be a comic superhero fan to enjoy this movie-watch it for the outstanding performances by Jackman,Stewart and Keen. This one's a gripping finale to Wolverine's indomitable journey.
The movie begins in the year 2029 with the opening scene showing Logan (Hugh Jackman) slumped over drunken stupor in the limousine that he drives around to eke out a living. The sound of thieves trying to steal his tires wakes him up and he tries to fight them but is shown struggling to pin them down. Although he eventually kills them, he gets shot a couple of times and is seen limping towards his limo before driving away. Next, he is seen driving across the US/Mexico border to a derelict and abandoned water plant where he is met by Caliban (Stephen Merchant) who asks him if he has got more medicine for Professor Charles Xavier (Sir Patrick Stewart). At 90, Xavier is now bedridden and suffering from dementia, which causes his once powerful brain to wreak havoc. Logan gives him his medicines but not before Charles has a powerful seizure. Logan manages to administer a sedative shot just in time. The next few scenes show how Logan's body is unable to heal itself in the same way like it used to, making him more vulnerable. After some time, Logan is at a cemetery when he is approached by a Mexican woman, who asks him for help. While he initially brushes her off, she keeps begging him to help her save a child. Once Logan gets into his car, he is approached by Donald Pierce (Boyd Holbrook) who tells him that he knows who Logan really is (a mutant) and asks him if someone came asking him for any help. Although Logan gives him no information whatsoever, Pierce leaves his Transigen business card in the car. Soon Logan is called to a motel to pick up a passenger, who turns out to be the same woman he met at the cemetery. Here, he sees Laura (Dafne Keen) for the first time. The woman tries to convince Logan to take her and Laura to a safe place for which she offers him $50,000 in total with $20,000 upfront. While Logan initially wants to walk away, the thought of the money tempts him to consider the request especially because he needs $75,000 to buy a boat and move someplace safe south with Xavier. Logan goes back home to tell Caliban and Xavier that he will be away for a few days to earn some money. He then drives back to the motel but discovers that the woman has been killed and Laura is missing. He returns home only to discover that Laura somehow managed to get into the trunk of his limo and come along with him. Just as Laura is discovered, Pierce arrives saying that he knows Xavier is hidden there. Logan knocks him out cold and asks Caliban to drop him off in the Mexican desert. Meanwhile, Xavier is delighted to discover Laura because he realises that she is a mutant. In the desert, Pierce wakes up and captures Caliban,as his henchmen arrive. Together, they raid the plant and try to capture Laura, who uses her adamantium claws to help Logan and Charles escape in the limo. The trio are unable to save Caliban, who is tortured savagely by Pierce in order to track Logan. Logan had found a cellphone in the murdered woman's motel room, which he had carried with him. Along with Xavier, the duo watch a video on the phone where she explains that her name is Gabriela and that she works as a nurse for Transigen in Mexico City. She reveals that Laura is not her daughter but a mutant. Although known as a cancer research institute, the place actually develops mutants where a number of children with superpowers are raised in inhuman conditions. While the staff at the institute try to introduce normal childhood parties, the management does not appreciate this. At this point, the cell battery dies. As they stop to fill the car for gas, Laura enters the store and randomly picks up items and is about to walk out without paying when she is stopped by a store clerk. When she is asked to pay for the items, she bares her claws and is about to attack when Logan enters and stops her. He picks up a phone charger from the store. Xavier meanwhile tells Logan that he is Laura's father' a fact that Logan refuses to accept. They soon reach a casino where he decide to halt to change their clothes and rest. As they watch TV, Charles explains that the movie playing, 'Shane' was the first movie he ever saw. Logan discovers old X-Men comics and lab files from Transigen in Laura's backpack, which confirms that Laura was germinated with James Howlett-donor DNA. Among the comic books, there is one which has a story about Eden in North Dakota. Logan resumes watching Gabriela's video where she reveals that the facility decided to shut down the mutant program and kill the mutant children, who were luckily taken by staff to safety. Logan buys a new car and on his way back to to the casino, notices Pierce's mercenaries. At this moment, Xavier starts to have another seizure, which causes everyone in sight to be paralysed in pain. Struggling against all odds, Logan gets to his hotel room, kills Pierce's henchmen who are holding Xavier at gunpoint and injects Xavier with a sedative. Logan, Xavier and Laura again run to the car and on the highway come across a family, whose horses have somehow escaped from their vehicle. Logan helps them and the grateful family, the Munsons, invite them for dinner. At their house Laura concentrates on her dinner while Xavier and Logan pretend to be father and son. The Munsons offer them a room to spend the night and Logan carries Xavier upstairs as Laura watches. Munson and Logan later walk to the farm to fix the water pump where they are confronted by a group of obnoxious armed men who accuse them of trespassing. With his claws, Logan threatens them menacingly. At the farm, Xavier is suddenly killed by Logan's duplicate' who then grabs Laura and puts her in metal restraints. This duplicate is a younger and more powerful clone of Logan. As Munson and Logan return home, they find a trail of dead bodies and Xavier slowly bleeding to death. Logan carries him to the car to safety. Soon, Logan and his clone get into a bitter fight as Zander Rice (Richard E. Grant) arrives with Pierce. Munson saves Logan's life by shooting the clone dead. Caliban, who has been brought along, manages to create a diversion by blowing up the Transigen car in a suicide act. Logan manages to escape with Laura and Xavier, who urges Logan to accept Laura as his daughter. Xavier dies of his injuries and is buried by Logan near a river. Logan is understandably angry. Meanwhile, the Transigen group inject Logan's clone with large injections of a green serum and start following Logan and Laura. Logan, who has fainted due to exhaustion and injuries, wakes up in doctor's office. The doctor instantly recognises Logan as a mutant and urges him to undergo tests to find out why he can't heal himself. Logan refuses and walks out with Laura, who finally convinces him to take her to Eden. Close to the Canadian border, they find a small house with several other mutant kids from Transigen, who nurse Logan and give him small doses of the green serum. After a day, Logan feels better but is still very weak. The next day before Logan wakes up, the children have already escaped but soon he notices drones flying around and the Transigen convoy advancing towards the kids. He finds the remaining green serum and injects himself. Logan discovers that the green serum gives him tremendous power and he rushes forward to help the children, who are slowly being captured by the men. Together with Laura,he kills several men before his clone arrives. Dr Rice confronts Logan, who shoots him dead while the children get together to kill Pierce. The clone gets into a vicious fight with Logan, who is impaled. Laura shoots the clone dead with an adamantium bullet. Logan is relieved to know that Laura is safe and dies peacefully. The kids get together and bury the Logan as Laura puts the grave cross as an X and walks to her freedom.
